Why Holbox Should Be One Of Your Favorite Islands Near Cancun?
By Miguel Flores 5 months agoHolbox is a small island of barely 25 miles long and a little bit more than a mile wide located in the northern end of the state of Quintana Roo, along with Isla Mujeres and Contoy Island is one of the 5 mexican caribbean islands near Cancun. The name “Holbox” comes from ancient yucatecan mayan and it means “black hole” which its hard to believe for us since the island is so colorful and unique!
The island itself is sort of connected to mainland through a sandbank but the easiest way to access is by ferry. Once you arrive to Holbox you will notice that there are no cars but rather bycicles and golf carts running around, the streets are not paved and most of the houses and small buildings are fully decorated with massive murals and street art from some of the most edgy and street artists in Mexico and the world.
Just take a look…
But Holbox is not only has amazing streetart but some serious awesome cuisine that foodies from all over the world crave. Small and intimate restaurants are sprinkled around town and the beach offering drooling dishes like Lobster Pizza which in recent years has become the trademark dish of the island. Just for the record, lobster is very popular in other ways in Holbox as well, like grilled lobster and lobster empanadas…yummm.
Or the quiet and relaxed sceneries you will find where you can feel the ocean breeze and inmerse yourself in your thoughts… its pure joy!
And last but not least, Holbox is part of a natural reserve that includes the corridor where you can have a whale shark experience, the island is one of the closest spots to where these giant and friendly creatures come to swim and mate every summer… isn´t that romantic?
There you have it, a few reasos why Holbox – along with Isla Mujeres - is one of our all time favorite islands near Cancun. We hope you take some time off your next visit and get up close and personal with paradise within paradise.
