Things To Do In Cancun When It Rains
By Marhuanta Barreto 5 months agoA friend of ours once said “A rainy day in Paradise is STILL a rainy day in Paradise” and that´s basically what happens whenever rains in Cancun and Riviera Maya. So, if you booked your summer vacations to Cancun and it happens to be raining once you arrive, worry no more! There are awesome things to do in Cancun when it rains, because some things actually work much better when raindrops are falling on your head!

The underground wonders of the Yucatan Peninsula.
Cenotes or sinkholes are a Yucatan trademark; these caves and underground rivers are usually connected through miles and miles, keeping a breathtaking rock formations that have been sculpted by Mother Nature for thousands of years.
Visiting and exploring these cenotes and underground rivers in the area are a MUST and luckily during the rain season they become cozier places since the limestone isolates the outside weather, the temperature of the water here changes and gets warmer, making your experience much pleasant. Here are a couple of activities that, in our opinión, are particularly fun when its wet:
Xplor.
This exciting park is only one hour south of Cancun and its placed between caves and cenotes and surrounded by jungle. It is super important to be there early in the morning so you can go through the check-in where the staff will give you your security helmet and the key to your locker so your belongins are safe and dry. Once you´ve changed into your swimsuit its time for an energizing breakfast at any of the two snack bars within the park. With fruits, hot chocolate, coffee, muffins and delicious smoothies so you can start your adventure.
At Xplor you will find two circuits with 14 zip-lines to fly over the jungle and landing into cenotes. Once you´ve gone through all the zip-lines you can explore the underground rivers either swimming or rowing on a canoe.
You can have a really nice lunch after at the buffet restaurant that has great variety of mexican dishes as well as international cuisine (the ribs are excellent here) and desserts and last, but not least, we recommend you drive fast and furiously an amphibious vehicle.
Río Secreto, Nature Reserve.
Río Secreto is an actual nature reserve south of Cancun as well and is simply STUNNING. In this preserved area is possible to find typical flora and fauna such as pumas, jaguars and ocelots, deers, ratcoons and many types of birds.
Once you arrive to base camp, you can leave your belongins safe and dry in a locker and you will proceed to take a good shower to wash any chemical substance you may have off your body. This step is really important to keep the water as clean as possible. Then you put your wetsuit on and a security helmet and you are ready to go!
Well… not quite, before entering a cave or a cenote in the area, permission to the mayan gods is required in order to get in, a shaman will perform a ceremony purifying the group of people that is about to go into the caves.
After receiving the blessing from the mayan underworld, your tour guide will give you some directions to keep the caves as untouched as possible, these rock formations are incredibly weak and it takes thousands of years to have big stalactites and stalagmite formations.
Inside the cave the scenery is just breathtaking. The paths where you can go are surrounded by amazingly shaped stalactites and stalagmites and in certain areas these formations can have different colors going from orange to purple, depending on the minerals that have been filtered by the limestone. The water is also crystal clear and in some places looks completely turquoise.
By the end of the tour and back to your dry clothes, you can have a grand meal at the buffet restaurant with plenty of food and beverages and relax on a hammock nearby, enjoying the jungle.
As you can see, once you find yourself in Paradise it doesn´t matter if its sunny or rainy and that when you are in Cancun, paradise can be both above and under the ground; making your vacations a unique and spectacular experience.
